Waterplanet - Girl

Waterplanet is a duo project by songwriters Millie Landrum and James Hesser, based in Baltimore. Creating psychedelic folk-art rock that has a pop twist, this group has a sound that seems to draw on many different influences that converge to give them a sound that is both familiar and something previously unheard. Today we dive into Waterplanet’s track, “Girl”, from the EP Never Far.

“Girl” is addictingly catchy and its brilliant melodic sensibilities will draw you in immediately; this is offset by lyrical content that emotive. Sonically, the song has folksy roots while maintaining a very melodic approach that keeps the listener fully engaged while listening. Although somewhat short at just a two minute and seventeen second runtime, the song feels longer - in a good way - because of how impactful the lyrics are. “Girl” reminds me of some of some of my favorite Patti Smith and Violent Femmes songs but also has the spirit and melodic capabilities that bands like The Go-Go’s had, though this song is certainly more subdued and folksy in its overall performance.

Overall, “Girl” is an excellent song that I have listened to many times in the lead up to writing this article; its catchy nature has had it stuck in my head for a few days now and its emotive lyrics are very memorable.
